Here it is…
You’ve got to ride YOUR bike.
The emphasis there is on ‘YOUR’ bike.
Not someone elses, not a frame that comes close, not even another static indoor bike trainer.
The reason being, no other bike will ever match the setup of YOUR own bike.
You HAVE to get comfortable putting out the hard efforts in a position that you will be replicating when you ride on the road or the trails.
There are a number of reasons we get you to bring your own bike, which I’ll go through and discuss below, but let’s back up a little bit and explain what we do at HURTBOX.
We run sophisticated and intelligent cycling sessions on THE best turbo trainers in the world where you get to ride YOUR OWN bike.
We hook it up, we design the session, you do the pedalling and BAM! We will get you feeling unstoppable!
There is nothing that even comes close to the Wahoo KICKRs we use in our studio. I personally have been training on one for over two years now and have logged around 250 hours on it. It’s fantastic.
The HURTBOX team have tested other indoor cycle trainers for research and came to the conclusion that the Wahoo KICKR was exactly what we were looking for when it came to our state of the art studio.
We don’t even get commission for talking about them or anything!
Matched with the best training program around, the combination is, well, you get the RESULTS you’re looking for!
So let me say it again…
No matter what people say, riding YOUR bike is THE only way to ride YOUR bike faster!
A couple of key reasons why you should be riding your own bike…
– Biomechanics and injury prevention.
When you’re training on a bike that isn’t your own and are logging a number of hours, any biomechanical issues or positional setup problems will lead to ‘niggles’ which inevitably WILL lead to injury.
The reason coaches recommend yearly bike fits (and in most cases more than one bike fit per year) is to make sure you are in the best position possible on YOUR bike to produce the most amount of power, in the most efficient position, AND in a position that will prevent any injuries.
Injuries = time off the bike, and time off the bike = a decline in fitness. Nobody wants that!
– Bike setup and components.
When you get comfortable logging hours on your own bike indoors, you will find it a breeze outdoors! You will have heard it before but…
Ride the bike you will be racing on
I personally train as many hours as possible on the Wahoo KICKR on my time trial bike in the aero position.
I ride indoors how I will race outdoors. But this doesn’t just apply to racing, it’s applicable to everyone.
If you plan to ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats or from one side of Europe to the other, you’ve got to train in the position you plan to ride in.
We say it all the time in the studio throughout sessions, get in the position on the bike that you want to replicate outside. There’s no point spending all the time on the top of the handlebars inside if you want to be riding on the drop bars outside!
– Equipment specifics.
The sorest issue for most people is their saddle (no pun intended).
Many will find it uncomfortable at first but then you adapt and eventually you will be at one with your saddle. It may not be the first saddle you try, or even the second but you will find one that suits your position and sit bones.
When you find it, stick with it! Now imagine training indoors on a saddle that is a different shape, cut or has more or less padding than your own one, you don’t want to go through the pain again of trying to get comfortable on it again, if you can even manage to get comfortable at all!
We get you to ride your bike on a saddle your bum remembers.
– Further Equipment Specifics…
The same goes for handlebars position and width.
Some handlebars are wider than others and some are positioned further forward or backwards than others.
The different positions are almost limitless and a decent bike fitter will spend a few hours setting it up perfectly for you to get in the best position to suit your goal, whether that be in an aero position to cheat the wind or a comfortable position so that you can ride for hours on end.
No matter how hard you try, you will never perfectly replicate this on another bike. I’ve harped on about it already but…
Get comfortable on YOUR OWN bike doing those hard efforts and you WILL be able to replicate that outdoors.
– Guess what… More Equipment Specifics…
Saddle height is another prime reason to ride YOUR OWN bike.
Any small changes in saddle height (no matter how minor) can lead to reductions in ability to produce the power needed to go faster or in more severe cases, terrible knee injuries further down the line.
I read a book by Sean Conway, who was racing around the world on a bike. He was logging thousands of miles and through his saddle sagging and effectively dropping his saddle position by only a few millimeters it caused him almost race-ending knee pain. He moved it back up and, hey presto, race was back on!
– Why Wahoo Kickrs…?
Other indoor trainers don’t always allow external control of the resistance and power output, and this is a huge reason we chose the Wahoo KICKR.
We’ve spent hours building carefully constructed workouts to give you the best training experience to make you faster in the shortest time possible.
To do this you HAVE to ride at the correct intensity. This is a HUGE and common mistake that many make…
They ride the easy rides too hard, and the hard rides too easy
In our studio, we control the resistance, we control the power, the only thing you have to do is turn those pedals and listen to the coach!
We always make sure you’re riding at the correct intensity and that you get through all of those intervals without dipping out (like you can on other indoor trainers!).
If the interval is too hard, and we’ve all experienced that before, our coach is there to adjust the resistance to a level that still drives a useful training adaptation and makes the most of the time you spend in the session.
If it’s too easy, and we will know when it is 😉
We can give you that little nudge in resistance and push you up to another level, and that’s how you make the improvements that make you FASTER!
When you work together with our equipment, software and coaches, we guarantee you will push yourself to a point you never thought doable previously.
So, in summary, we combine our perfectly constructed indoor sessions with the best turbo trainer around and we guarantee to get you riding FASTER.
Why would you want to ride anything else?
