For the eager eyed among you, you may have seen me (Coach Ant) take on the new version of the FTP test that our software is utilising.
(Check out the video here)
I’ll give you a quick breakdown.
The old protocol consisted of warming up, then riding for 20 minutes.
The aim of which was to ride the best average power possible for that amount of time.
The test was frankly hard, mentally tough and we found many of our members avoiding the FTP test through fear of the hurt it caused!
The number of variables that could affect the scores too were huge.
Some of the major ones were:
– Pacing (you could mess things up very quickly…!)
– Concentration (20 minutes is a long and hard effort)
– Perception (if you rode the opening 5 minutes badly you could easily give up)
The new protocol makes for a much simpler ride:
To give you perspective, my test lasted under 20 minutes including warm up (you can see the step ups in the image above. One minute per step after 5 minutes)
Of that test, only the final 4-5 minutes were tough. Each minute gaining in intensity until I could no longer turn the pedals!
The day after?
I happily rode for 2.5 hours out on the road with no ill effects from the test.
Currently I don’t have a direct comparison. This morning I rode 4×5 minutes at my new FTP.
Each 5 minute block was just about manageable but I could have probably hung on a bit longer if I needed to (i.e. if a test result hung on it).
So for me, this new test was about right and the result (320W if you are interested) is pretty much where I think I am riding right now.
We’ll be putting our members through this new version of the test at the end of October so in a couple of weeks, we’ll have a pretty good indication on whether this new test is better (or worse) than the previous one…
I’ve a feeling everyone is going to be as fond of it as I am!
HOWEVER… I am sorely tempted to do another 20 minute test as a comparison between the two…
So I’ve a challenge for you.

I’ll complete the 20 minute test as a comparison for you… And I’ll film the 20 minutes (just for those who loved watching me hurt so much…) 🤣
